Social worker arrested on drug charges

Many municipalities throughout North Carolina have social programs in place to help mitigate criminal activity and violence in their communities. Those who work for these organizations regularly work with drug addicts and others with serious problems; however, sometimes, the employees themselves can get caught up in illegal activity. Such may be the case for one employee in Bull City who was recently arrested on drug charges.

Arrest and charges

According to reports, a 40-year-old woman was an employee with Bull City United, an outreach program designed to cut down on violence and crime in the area. The accused worked as an outreach worker. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the woman was placed under arrest and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver crack cocaine.

Officials in Durham County would not elaborate on the charges or arrest, and reporters could not make contact with the woman when they went to the address on record to speak with her. The report also could not confirm whether the woman had been suspended from the outreach program. She was released from jail on an unsecured bond.

Right to defense

The report did state that many workers with the program have criminal histories and that having a good level of “street smarts” actually makes them more effective as counselors. Regardless, facing charges for intent to distribute illegal narcotics is very serious, and the woman will want to work with an experienced criminal defense attorney in North Carolina for assistance. A conviction on these charges will have serious repercussions on her future, but she can rely on the aggressive advocacy of a lawyer to help her pursue the best outcome possible.
