Joint law enforcement operation results in several arrests

This is the time of year when children go back to school in North Carolina. In order to help keep their communities’ streets safe for all, law enforcement joined forces to conduct an effort to help reduce the amount of crime and illicit drugs in their area. The operation took place in Alexander County and resulted in at least five arrests. Now, those charged with crimes are likely considering their options for mounting an effective criminal defense.

Operation and arrests

Led by the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, “Operation Back to School” happened over the course of one day on Friday, Aug. 19. Authorities conducted the operation from around 3 p.m. until midnight, and members of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety K-9 unit along with the State Highway Patrol and others assisted. Law enforcement focused their efforts in the areas around Highway 127, Highway 64 East and Highway 90 East.

During the operation, authorities initiated numerous traffic stops and conducted searches for illegal narcotics. They issued at least 67 traffic violations and made several arrests. Five people were arrested, and they face charges that include driving while impaired and flee to elude arrest as well as outstanding warrants. The report also mentioned that the operation has led to additional narcotics investigations, so ostensibly, more charges may result.

Right to defense

Those charged with crimes in this latest law enforcement operation have the right to fight the charges against them. As such, they will want to work closely with an experienced criminal defense attorney in North Carolina. A lawyer may question the methods law enforcement used to conduct searches and make arrests, and an attorney may be able to use that to obtain the most favorable outcome possible for a client.
