On Behalf of | Apr 16, 2023 | DWI/DUI

Most drivers know that getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol is not only dangerous but illegal. Yet, drunk driving continues to be a significant problem in North Carolina. In one area of the state, police forces recently ramped up enforcement efforts to combat driving under the influence, which resulted in several arrests and DUI charges

Several were arrested and charged

The DUI crackdown occurred in Wake County over St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Reportedly, multiple police departments were involved, including the Wake County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Reports said a total of 33 drivers were arrested and charged during the two-day crackdown.

This was part of an ongoing effort to keep roads safe in Wake County. According to data from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Wake County had the most alcohol-related accidents in North Carolina last year. In the days leading up to St. Patrick’s Day weekend, police departments across the state notified the public that they would be ramping up patrols.

Defense options

Although alcohol is responsible for most DUI arrests, drivers should know that they can also be subject to a DUI or DWI charge if they drive after taking certain medications or using marijuana. Fortunately, those in North Carolina who have been hit with a DUI or DWI charge have options available to defend against any formal charges. By retaining the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney, those accused can ensure the protection of their personal rights while working toward achieving the best possible outcome relative to their specific situation.
