Residents in North Carolina and around the country have been highly aware of the changes that have been taking place over the last few years regarding immigration. From the proposed end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act to the push to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico and more, it can often feel as though the very nation that was built by immigrants may now be turning away from them altogether.
One of the efforts being made by the current federal administration is designed to limit the number of visas granted to people from other countries allowing them to enter the United States with the intention of working here. This move has prompted many groups to come forward and request that visas for workers in skilled or specialty areas be excluded from this change.
Forbes explains that the heart of innovation and entrepreneurship in America has long relied on people from other countries who have special training, experience or knowledge to share. Health care, technology and manufacturing are just three industries that some are indicating could be hurt significantly if L-1 and H-1B visas are limited.
L-1 visas are granted to people who work for foreign companies that have operations in the U.S. These visas allow the foreign employee to work at the U.S. location. An H-1B visa may allow a person from another country who is in a special field enter the U.S. and work for an American company. If this is granted, their spouse may be able to receive what is called an H-4 visa.
